Commemoration of International Data Protection Day

The Catalan Data Protection Authority (APDCAT), the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD), and the Digital Law and Artificial Intelligence Section of the Barcelona Bar Association (ICAB) will held the ‘Privacy Day Dialogues’ on January 28, coinciding with International Data Protection Day. The event will bring together experts in the field to analyze the main current and future challenges.

The opening session will take place at 9 a.m., led by Lorenzo Cotino Hueso, President of the AEPD; Meritxell Borràs i Solé, Director of APDCAT; Cristina Vallejo Ros, Dean of ICAB; Alexander Salvador Cerqueda, Member of the ICAB Governing Board; and Júlia Bacaria Gea, President of the ICAB Digital Law and AI Section.

This will be followed by a debate organized around four round tables: Cybersecurity, data breaches and data protection; Data protection and artificial intelligence; New regulations and opportunities for privacy professionals; and Towards a statute for privacy professionals.

The first round table, Cybersecurity, Data Breaches and Data Protection, will feature Francisco Pérez Bes, Deputy Director at the AEPD; Genís Margarit, Professor at Pompeu Fabra University; and Laura Caballero, Director of the Catalan Cybersecurity Agency. The discussion will be moderated by David De Falguera, Partner in Digital Law at a law firm and Vice-Chair of the ICAB’s Digital Law and AI Section.

The second panel, Data Protection and Artificial Intelligence, will include Xavier Urios Aparisi, Head of the Legal Advisory Office of the APDCAT; Aleida Alcaide, Director General for Artificial Intelligence at the Spanish Secretariat of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence; Lorenzo Cotino, President of the AEPD; and Albert Tort, Secretary for Telecommunications and Digital Transformation of the Government of Catalonia. Moderation will be provided by Paula Martin Fargas, Data Protection Officer at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and member of the ICAB’s Digital Law and AI Section.

The third round table, New Regulations and Opportunities for Privacy Professionals, will bring together Marta Beltrán, Head of Area at the AEPD’s Technological Innovation Division; Meritxell Borràs i Solé, Director of the APDCAT; Eduard Chaveli, Head of Consulting Strategy at Govertis – Telefónica Tech and President of the ICAV’s IT Law Section; and Manel Carpio, Cybersecurity Partner at a law firm and expert in AI ethics and regulation. The session will be moderated by David Molina, Director of Digital Law at a law firm and member of the ICAB’s Digital Law and AI Section.

The event will conclude with the round table Towards a Statute for Privacy Professionals, focusing on the recognition and consolidation of the role of data protection officers and privacy experts. Participants will include Rosa Parrilla, DPO of the Department of the Presidency of the Government of Catalonia; Miguel Recio, President of APEPIA; and Carlos A. Saiz, Vice-President of ISMS Forum. The debate will be moderated by Roger Vilanova, Director of Privacy, Intellectual Property and New Technologies at a law firm.

The event is conceived as a reference forum for reflection and exchange between professionals and institutions in the fields of digital law, data protection, and artificial intelligence.
