The President of the Advisory Council on Data Protection, Josep Domingo-Ferrer, received this Friday the insignia of Knight of the Order of Academic Palms, the oldest distinction awarded in the civil sphere to professionals for their contribution to cultural and educational heritage. The recognition dates back to 1808 and was established by Napoleon I to honour personalities from the university and academic world.
Domingo-Ferrer is Professor of Computer Science at Rovira i Virgili University, director of the Cybersecurity Research Centre of Catalonia (CYBERCAT) and of the UNESCO Chair in Data Privacy. He holds a degree and a PhD in Computer Science from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, a degree in Mathematics from UNED, and a Master's degree in Philosophy from Paris-Nanterre University. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, including a Google Faculty Research Award (2014), the grade of IEEE Fellow (2012), the ICREA Academia Award (2008, 2013, 2018 and 2023), and the Narcís Monturiol Medal for Scientific Merit awarded by the Government of Catalonia (2012). Since 2016, he has been a full member of the Institute of Catalan Studies.
The event, which took place at the French Institute of Barcelona, was presided over by the Consul General of France in Barcelona, Azar Agah-Ducrocq, and was attended by Anne Laure Martorell, teacher at the French Lycée of Barcelona; Valérie Nicolas, director of the French Institute of Barcelona; and Meritxell Borràs i Solé, director of the Catalan Data Protection Authority.
